The neck-and-neck race between China and the US remained tight until the last competition on the calendar.
The women’s basketball victory sent the US to the top, followed by China in second and Japan in third — the exact outcome of the 2020 Tokyo Games.
In Paris, the US and China won the same amount of gold medals, 40.
However, the US nabbed more silver medals than China (44 versus 27), as well as more medals overall (126 versus 91).
Host France did extremely well, ranking as the first European country ahead of Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. It improved its Tokyo 2020 record by winning six additional golds and thirty-one more medals overall.

Athletes from 184 countries represented 206 Olympic committees, plus the refugee Olympic team, competing for gold in 32 sports, including four new additions.

The Olympics officially wrapped up on Sunday night, with the closing ceremony at the Stade de France in Paris.
