  • For the granting of its status as a candidate for membership of the European Unionkyiv can count on the support of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who on Wednesday called on European leaders to “to rise to the height of historical responsibility”. On Thursday, Volodymyr Zelensky continued his “telephone marathon” among European leaders to obtain a consensus in favor of yes. At 11 a.m., Olivier Costa, political scientist and European Parliament specialist, answered your questions.
  • The European summit must be followed by a G7 summit and a third by NATO, which will be attended by the President of the United States, Joe Biden. The question of financial aid to Kyiv should be at the heart of discussions at these meetings. In Berlin on Wednesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for the establishment “a Marshall Plan” for the reconstruction of Ukraine, with a budget of several billion euros. The White House stressed that Mr. Zelensky would intervene, by videoconference, during these two meetings.
  • Russian forces continue to tighten their grip on the twin cities of Lyssytchansk and Sievierodonetsk, in Donbass. The pocket of Ukrainian resistance around these two strategic industrial cities is increasingly surrounded by the Russians. “They want to destroy all of Donbass, step by step. Entirely. Lysychansk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk… They want to turn all cities into Mariupol”said Mr. Zelensky on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.
  • In Mykolaiv, two grain storage terminals were hit by Russian shelling Wednesday, injuring five people. The ports of Mykolaiv and Odessa have been blocked since the beginning of the conflict, which has paralyzed the maritime transport of agricultural raw materials, the main export route for Ukraine until then.
