The firefighters remain mobilized on Wednesday August 14, but the fire no longer has an active front, only ” some outbreaks that could lead to a resumption of fires”a fire brigade spokesman told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Since Sunday, a major fire has broken out forty kilometres northeast of Athens, in Varnavas.
One person died and 71 others were injured. About a hundred houses and nearly 10,000 hectares burned. Satellite images show the extent of the damage.
Greece is particularly vulnerable to forest fires after a very dry winter. June and July were the hottest months since records began in 1960.
