More than 160,000 people living in five municipalities in the Spanish region of Catalonia were called upon by the authorities not to leave their homes, Saturday, May 10, due to a toxic cloud of chlorine caused by fire in an industrial deposit.

“If you are in the affected area, do not leave your home or your workplace”asked on social networks civil protection in the northeast region of Spain. The affected municipalities are located on the coast, between Barcelona and Tarragona.

For the moment, “No injuries were reported”communicated the firefighters on the social network X. The fire soldiers mobilized major means to extinguish the fire, which declared itself at dawn, on Saturday, in an industrial warehouse which stores swimming pool products, in the municipality of Vilanova I La Geltru, which generated the toxic cloud of chlorine, according to the firefighters.

Saturday morning, the firefighters claimed to have mastered the fire, but worked on “Monitoring the cloud generated by fire to follow its evolution and toxicity levels”. “The chlorine rarely ignites, but when it burns, it is very difficult to extinguish”said the owner of the industrial deposit, Jorge Viñuales Alonso, on the radio.
