More than 25,000 Ukrainians asked for asylum in Europe in 2024. More than half of them did so in France even though the latter is the ninth host country of Ukrainians in Europe since the start of the war in 2022. A singular situation which explains why, Wednesday, May 14, the Senate, dominated by the right, looked with transpartis. Nièvre Nadia Sollogoub. The objective: to stop the phenomenon of increasing asylum demand by improving the temporary protection system enjoyed by Ukrainians. The Senate adopted the text at 343 votes and 1 abstention.

Temporary protection is an exceptional regime resulting from a European directive of 2021, which had been activated for the first time shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in March 2022. This was what the Ukrainians were able to settle where they wanted it in Europe and benefit from a provisional residence permit allowing them to work, to be accommodated, to touch a subsistence allowance. In France, they can also perceive family allowances and housing assistance. Europe had distinguished itself by its reactivity and the consensus which reigned among its member states.
