In 2024, it happened 12 million each day, that is to say twice as much as in 2023 and three times more than in 2022, while 70 % of Europeans made online purchases.
In more than 90 % of cases, these fashion items, makeup products, toys, DIY tools, decorative items and other low -cost household appliances emanate from China, through platforms such as the site of E -Smu or the shein online clothing brand, which experiences dazzling growth. The breakthrough of these two actors, alongside Amazon or Aliexpress, gave another dimension to the online sale of cheap products.
For the European Union (EU), this constitutes a major challenge, insofar as, most of the time, these various and varied products do not meet community standards, any more than they obey the rules in force On the continent. “Recent data (…) show that up to 96 % of the products sold on these platforms do not fully comply with our rules and our safety standards ”says Michael McGrath, the Commissioner for Justice. Nearly three -quarters of counterfeits seized in Europe in 2022 were from China, as well as half of non -food dangerous products, adds the Commission.
