The Chancellor of Echiquier Rachel Reeves confirmed, Wednesday, January 29, the green light from the British government to build a third track for Heathrow International Airport, the most active in Europe (83.9 million passengers in 2024). This project remains very controversial: all environmental defenders oppose it, as well as many inhabitants of the West London and a lot of elected officials, to the right and to the left of the national political spectrum.
The British Minister of Finance, however, ignited these multiple reserves in the name of growth – “First government mission” – that she wants to energize, while the British gross domestic product has hardly progressed since the coming to power of Labor Prime Minister Keir Starmer in July 2024. A third track in Heathrow, located west of London, could Pass the number of platform flights from 480,000 to 720,000 per year and create up to 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, assures Downing Street, which also confirmed its support for the expansion of two other airports currently at saturation on Wednesday: Gatwick, south of the capital, and Luton Airport, to the north.
