Mental anorexia, bulimia and bulimic hyperphagia, listed as food behavior (TCA) disorders affect nearly a million people in France, in particular young adolescent girls, and, according to health insurance, the second cause of premature mortality in 15-24 year olds, just after the road accidents.

These statistics are similar in our transalpine neighbors and it is to better understand this reality that the photographer Lavinia Nocelli followed, during the summer of 2021, the patients of the Center for Fermo eating disorders, in the Marche region. The world chose to publish this report in Italy on the occasion of the week of awareness of food behaviors, organized from June 2 to 8 by the French Federation Anorexie Boulimie, an association of specialized health professionals.

Patients suffering from a eating disorder frequently try to make their suffering visible through gestures of “appeal to help”. Among adolescents, this can manifest itself by cuts on the arms, legs or other parts of the body. Some are exhausted by forcing themselves to vomit after meals. Others were silent in silence, isolating themselves from their family and friends. Anyone affected by eating disorder seeks help in one way or another. The challenge for those around them is to recognize it and intervene in time. When she arrived at the center of eating disorders, Chiara was still a minor. In his case, the bolimie crises occurred at night, far from the vigilant gaze of his parents, who, for months, did not understand what was wrong with their daughter.
