The Commission confirmed on Wednesday February 5, the launch of an investigation against the Shein online clothing seller, suspected of not respecting European law on consumer protection. Shein is considered an emblem of the social and environmental drifts of fashion at low prices. But the company has promised to collaborate with all stakeholders to respond to the concerns expressed.

The platform, founded in China in 2012 and whose head office is now in Singapore, is suspected of not sufficiently fighting the sale of illegal products that do not meet European standards. Last June, the European Commission sent him a series of questions on this subject.

The Brussels executive will coordinate investigations with the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC) which brings together the competent authorities of EU member states.

Temu also in the crosshairs of the European authorities

The opening of this procedure had already been announced on Monday by sources close to the file. In the event of proven violations, Shein could be inflicted fines by national regulators. In France, it is the general management of competition, consumption and the repression of fraud (DGCCRF).

“Shein greets efforts that strengthen the confidence and safety of European consumers when they make online shopping”reacted a spokesperson, in a statement, promising that the company was going to collaborate with the EU and national governments.

Another e-commerce site of Chinese origin, TEMU, is in the crosshairs of the European authorities for similar reasons. At the end of October, the Commission had opened an investigation against this platform, suspected of acting insufficiently against the sale of illegal, potentially dangerous products.
