Several people were killed on Friday evening, August 23, by an assailant armed with a knife during a festival in the German city of Solingen, in the west of the country, the DPA news agency reported, without specifying the number of victims.
The attack took place at around 9:45 p.m. According to DPA, which cites unidentified police sources, the attacker has not been arrested. Witnesses confirmed that he fled, according to the German daily. Image which announces the death of at least three people.
The local newspaper Solinger Tageblatt reported that authorities called on people to leave Solingen city centre and that one of the festival organisers, Philipp Müller, said on stage that rescuers were battling to save the lives of nine people.
The festival, which marks the 650the anniversary of the city, began on Friday and was due to continue until Sunday. Solingen has around 160,000 inhabitants and is located close to the larger cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf.
