DIn the years, I seize all the occasions that arise to me to encourage the European Union (EU) and its member states to invest more in defense.
When the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, ordered the total invasion of Ukraine, I raised many times (as a European parliamentarian) the question of what additional evidence we needed to finally recognize the threats that weighed over the whole of Europe. What would we do, Europeans, if our security was jeopardized, and if our closest ally, the United States, was engaged elsewhere than on our continent?
This is precisely the situation we face today. American leaders declare Openly not intended to devote a significant part of their time and resources to the management of issues they consider European. As the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio expresses, the United States must now “Focus on other priorities”.
