While Poland has just taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) at the beginning of January, with the strong desire to advance security and defense issues, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, must go to Warsaw , Monday January 13. A visit with mainly support for Ukraine on the menu, but also a more global desire for rapprochement with an allied country in the process of becoming essential in Europe in the military field.
Mr. Lecornu's visit follows in the footsteps of that of Emmanuel Macron, on December 12, 2024. The French head of state then came to Warsaw to discuss in particular with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk the sending of troops in Ukraine as the prospect of peace negotiations between kyiv and Moscow seems to be getting closer. Mr. Lecornu's trip today, however, is intended to focus on broader subjects, Mr. Tusk having shown himself to be very reserved on the draft “coalition” to form an interposition force.
“Poland's priority is not sending troops, but ensuring that the sending of weapons to Ukraine continues, or even develops in Europe with industrial defense production that follows the pace over time »explains Amélie Zima, specialist on Poland and NATO at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI). “Warsaw's goal is that kyiv is not pushed into making territorial concessions to Russia, otherwise, in its eyes, the policy of fait accompli will have won », adds the researcher.
