Seventeenth gections of the European Union against Russia

The European Union imposed on Tuesday a seventeenth sanctions train to Russia, which concerns new oil tankers “Ghosts” Used to circumvent previous retaliation measures against Russian oil exports, European diplomacy head, Kaja Kallas announced.

“The EU approved its seventeenth pack of sanctions against Russia, which aims at nearly 200 ships in its ghost fleet”she wrote on social network X, on the sidelines of a meeting of the ministers of defense of the European Union in Brussels. “Other sanctions against Russia are in preparation. The more Russia waged war, the more severe our response ”she added.

This new ensemble, in discussions for several weeks, concerns precisely 189 new ghost ships and around thirty entities suspected of helping Russia to bypass the sanctions already implemented. A total of 342 ships are now affected, according to a press release from the twenty-seven. Estonian Minister of Defense, Hanno Pevkur, estimated the number of these ships on Tuesday, adding that the EU could still broaden his sanctions. A eighteenth set of measures is already in negotiations. These new measures are distinct from those envisaged in the event that Moscow refuses the thirty-day ceasefire accepted by Ukraine and claimed by its Western allies.

The EU also adopted on Tuesday, for the first time, sanctions in response to so -called “hybrid” attacks attributed to Russia. Twenty -one individuals and six entities are affected by these measures, which provide for a freezing of assets and a ban on entering the Union.
