The migratory flows to Europe are reduced and redirect according to the agreements made between the countries of departure and arrival. From 1er January to June 9, 57,222 people joined the Old Continent, including 54,650 by sea-Mediterranean Basin and Atlantic Ocean-, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). They were more than 65,000 over the same period a year earlier.
The vast majority of these exiles – around 41,000 – left the African coasts. To the west, 11,337 migrants, mainly from Mali, reached the Canary Islands from Morocco or Mauritania, a decrease of 35 % compared to the first half of 2024. 5,459 others landed in Ceuta, on the Andalusian coasts or the Balearics from Algeria and Morocco.
In total, Spain records a decrease of 26 % of arrivals in its territory. A decrease which is explained in particular by signed agreements, one between Spain and Morocco in February 2023, the other between the European Union (EU) and Mauritania in March 2024, to fight against irregular migration. Nouakchott has announced that he had intercepted more than 30,000 migrants on soil since the start of the year.
