The fall of a cabin of a cable car in the region of Naples, in southern Italy, left four dead on Thursday, April 17, said the town hall of Castellammare di Stabia, where the accident, at the France-Presse (AFP) and the emergency services, performed atItalian news agency Ansa. “Last news (…)there were three or four dead and missing ”had first told AFP an official of the municipality of Castellammare di Stabia.

The emergency services then informed the ANSA that the missing person had been found lifeless. A fifth person, seriously injured, was evacuated as a helicopter, said the Italian news agency. The firefighters confirmed, adding that the assessment was final.

The cable car connects the city of Castellammare di Stabia, in the Gulf of Naples, at Mont Faiso over a distance of almost three kilometers. The accident occurred following the break of a cable from this cable car, while a cabin with sixteen passengers on board was very close to the city and the ground, while a second cabin was at Mont Faiso above a precipice. The sixteen passengers of the first cabin were all quickly rescued, but the bad weather and the fog at altitude prevented those from the second cabin quickly.

This cable car was inaugurated in 1952 and, so far, only one accident had been recorded, in 1960, when a cabin had fallen to the ground, causing the death of four people.
