Three employees of a high school in the town of Sanski Most in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina were killed after a man, also working at the school, opened fire on Wednesday, August 21, local media reported, citing regional police. “This man who used a military weapon, an automatic rifle, killed three school employees, and tried to commit suicide” on site, cantonal police spokesman Adnan Beganovic told national radio (BHR1).
Mr Beganovic added that the attacker, who was seriously injured, had been taken to a hospital in Banja Luka (north).
The shooting occurred shortly after 10am. Emergency services were dispatched to the site, and local police, also on the scene, have so far not commented on the attacker's motive. According to local media, he is the subject of disciplinary proceedings and shot his colleagues during a meeting to prepare for the start of the solar school year.
The last school shooting that shocked the Balkans took place in May 2023 in Belgrade when a teenager killed ten people, including nine of his classmates.
