Europe, the continent that heats up as quickly as possible on earth, undergoes the impact of the climate crisis. The year 2024 was the hottest ever recorded-as on a planetary scale-, with record temperatures in the center, East and Southeast regions. Storms have often been violent and floods were widespread, killing at least 335 people and affecting 413,000 people, according to The report on the state of the European climatepublished Tuesday April 15 by the Copernicus service concerning climate change (C3S) and the World Meteorological Organization (OMM).
The old continent heats up “Twice as fast as the world average”recalls Samantha Burgess, strategic climate manager at C3S. Different factors are involved: the region includes part of the Arctic, where mercury climbs the fastest on earth, changes in atmospheric circulation promote more frequent summer waves and the fight against air pollution decreases aerosols, which partly reflect the sun's rays.
