DIn his nomination speech delivered on January 20, Donald Trump announced that, under his presidency, “The United States will consider themselves again as a country (…) which extends its territory (…) and carries his flag towards new and magnificent horizons ». By these words, the American president has developed his own vision of “manifest destiny”. To the original idea that the American nation is intended to divine its expansion on a global scale The new tenant of the White House favors the conception of a world in which what he deems is the great powers, namely the United States, China and Russia, are intended to exercise absolute control and maximum exploitation of their spheres of influence.

In this context, three territories were, in its mouth, the repeated targets of its expansionist aim. The first is Canada, for which he never ceased to proclaim that he is intended to become 51e US state. The second is the Panama canal, which he said he wanted to ” to resume “. The third is Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty, for which he said to The NBC channel, March 30 :: “We will end up having Greenland. I am 100 % sure ”before adding: “There is a good chance that [cette annexion] is done without use of the military force ”but “All options are on the table”.

Between these three targets, President Trump and his advisers believe that Greenland, due to his internal political situation and the very nature of this territory, is the most vulnerable prey. While the White House works for scenarios to take control of this island, let us no longer have any illusion: the era of bravades and verbal provocations of Donald Trump's first mandate is behind us. We have entered a phase where every day brings us closer to what could be annexed by the United States to a territory belonging to a Member State of the European Union.
