DEtuis two hundred and fifty years, the United States is intended to be a symbol of democracy, an example of freedom and sovereignty to which the rest of the world can aspire. Our declaration of independence and our constitution have long been considered as models to follow to guarantee these human rights and these freedoms. We are no longer there, alas. By engaging our country on the path of authoritarianism, Donald Trump aligns with dictators and despots who share his contempt for democracy and the rule of law.
On February 24, breaking with what was the long -standing American position, the Trump administration voted against a United Nations resolution in which Russia was clearly designated as the dreadful war initiator against Ukraine. In this resolution, Russia was also required that it withdraws its occupied Ukraine forces, in accordance with international law. This text was carried by our closest allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and dozens of other democracies. In all, 93 countries [sur 193] voted for.
Rather than joining our historic allies to defend democracy and respecting international law, the president preferred to vote against this resolution, alongside authoritarian regimes such as Russia, North Korea, Iran and Belarus. Among the other countries which have voted against are many unsustructed states supported militarily by Russia.
Let’s not ourselves ourselves: this vote is not trivial. In doing so, the President of the United States turned back to 250 years of American history and aligned himself openly on the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin. In doing so, the President of the United States has jeopardized the independence of Ukraine.
Turn to authoritarianism
Let’s not lose sight of which is Vladimir Putin. It was the man who stopped Russia's march towards democracy after the end of the Cold War. He fits the elections, caused opponents to be murdered and trampled on press freedom. He maintains himself in power thanks to the simple market he offered to the Russian oligarchs: “Give me all the powers and I will let you strip the Russian people as much as you want. He sparked the deadliest conflict that Europe has known since the Second World War.
