Azerbaijan and Armenia announced on Thursday that they have agreed on a “Peace agreement” after negotiations intended to settle decades of conflict between these two countries of the Caucasus. These announcements represent “A decisive step towards sustainable peace and security in the region. It is essential to maintain this dynamic and to ensure that this process is carried out without clashes ”said on Friday, March 14, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas on Friday, in a statement.
“The process of negotiations on the text of the peace agreement with Armenia has been concluded”had told the press Minister of Foreign Affairs Azerbaijani, Djeyhoun Baïramov. Shortly after, it was Armenian diplomacy that underlined in a statement that the peace agreement was “Ready to be signed”saying that he is willing to start discussions on the date and place of the signature.
On Friday, the United States also welcomed this agreement, by calling, by the voice of the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the two parties to commit to peace. “The time has come to engage in favor of peace, to sign and ratify the treaty and to open a new era of prosperity for the peoples of the Southern Caucasus”he assured in a press release.
“Turn on the page of a conflict of several decades”
“This is an opportunity for the two countries to turn the page on a several decades old conflict, in accordance with President Trump's vision for a more peaceful world”then concluded the Secretary of State.
Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council – body which brings together the heads of state and government of the countries of the European Union – also encouraged the leaders of the two countries ” to quickly sign the peace agreement ”.
The day before, the French president reacted to this announcement of finalization of the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, by greeting it in a message on X. “Nothing is now opposed to the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, who must open the way to lasting peace in the South Caucase”wrote Emmanuel Macron.
