What better opportunity than the “electoral super-year” of 2024 to test the resilience of one of the fundamental pillars of democracy? That year, 4.1 billion people worldwide were called to the polls, half of the planet's inhabitants. Some 1.6 billion voters were able to express their voices in 74 national elections. Unsurprisingly, in a context where many indicators point to a decline in democracy, the analysis of the progress of these polls confirms the trend.

“Never have the elections have faced with a set of challenges as complex and formidable as it is today, these are disinformation campaigns, disturbances due to extreme climatic phenomena or pure and simple denial of electoral results”observes Kevin Casas-Zamora, the secretary general of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), in the introduction of a report published Monday, June 9, on the eve of the opening conference on the integrity of the elections, which will be held in Stockholm, from June 10 to 12.
