More than three years after the start of the large -scale war launched by the Russians in Ukraine, on February 24, 2022, the amount of financial, humanitarian and military aid granted to kyiv by his allies remains capital for the outcome of the conflict. However, Ukraine has to meet the disengagement of the United States which accompanied the return to the White House of Donald Trump, on January 20, 2025. The manager, in fact, displayed very clear prorussian positions.

“The United States, which was previously the biggest donor to Ukraine, have not announced a new envelope since the beginning of January”reports The German Institute Kielwhich publishes the amount of aid promised and provided to Ukraine several times a year. Donald Trump even imposed on the country a “deal” on the exploitation of his minerals, presented as a counterpart with American aid.

Since the beginning of 2025, subsidies from European countries have, on the other hand, strongly believed and have come to compensate for the withdrawal of Washington. In just three months, Europe – in the geographical sense – thus allocated 19.1 billion euros to Ukraine. It is the highest total in a quarter since February 2022.

Critical or sustainable support?

The Kiel Institute ignores “If it is a temporary increase or the beginning of a more sustainable development of the role of Europe as the main support of Ukraine”. In any case, this recent increase was “Pulled by a small group of countries”notes the German organization. At the forefront of these are the Nordic States (Norway released 670 million euros in April 2025, Sweden 1.6 billion, in March).
