Savvy tips and deals to enjoy the sunshine for less – from suncream to sunnies

AS the temperature rises, so will the amount you spend on sun protection.

The cost of shielding yourself from harmful rays can cast a dark cloud over sunny days.

Luckily, with some value buys and savvy tips you can make the most of the summer weather for less.

FIND A SHADY DEAL: Doctors recommend staying in the shade between 11am and 3pm in the summer months, and you can hide from harmful rays all day long under the Zebra parasol from The Range, £15.99.

CHECK YOUR CUPBOARDS: Before you spend cash on new suncreams, check your shelves for any left from last year.

Unopened creams should be OK as long as they are not more than three years old.

For those that have been partly used, look for the “open jar” symbol on the packaging saying how many months you can use it for after opening.

READ THE LABEL: When buying sunscreen, look for a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to protect against UVB, and at least four-star UVA protection.

Don’t be put off by a cheaper price tag. Aldi’s Clear Sun Sprays, 200ml, are £2.99, and claim to give five-star UVA protection with an SPF30 or SPF50+.

If you have a brand you love, get 25 per cent off all suncare products at escentual.com from Tuesday with the code SUN25.

SAVE ON SUNNIES: The cheapest sunglasses will not necessarily protect your eyes — but some expensive ones won’t either.

Always look for a CE, UV400 or British Standard Mark 12312-1:2013.

New Look says its round sunglasses in black, brown or stone conform to the standard and are £8.99.

PASS THE TEST: Become a tester. Sign up this month at nivea.co.uk/advice/reviewpanel for the chance to test the company’s sun products.

You will find out after the closing date on May 31 if you have been successful.

According to the website Magic Freebies, there are 400 products ready to test.
